As of May 5th, 2022 I’m very pleased to announce that I have successfully completed the exam requirements set out by the College of Massage Therapy of BC, and now have officially achieved my professional designation as an RMT!
My journey to becoming an RMT began 3 years ago while I was busy working as the Chef de Partie at the Sparkling Hill Wellness resort just outside Kelowna BC. At the time I was working long hours, which always included evenings, holidays, and weekends, and after close to 15 years working as a professional Chef I was looking for an opportunity to move into a career that could offer a better work-life balance.
In January of 2020, I took the plunge and enrolled myself in the RMT training program at the Okanagan Valley College of Massage Therapy in Vernon, Canada’s first nationally accredited college of massage. OVCMT is renowned as the school that set the standard for educational requirements across Canada and has been training RMTs in BC since 1992. During my time in college, I became thoroughly engaged with the curriculum and enjoyed learning about assessment, strength testing, myofascial techniques, neuromuscular therapy, hydrotherapy, and therapeutic exercise. As a student, I took pride in working together with my patients to help develop a treatment plan that was focused on their rehabilitation goals, and as a result, many of them were able to recover successfully from their previous injuries. I finished the intensive 2-year program in November of 2021 and went on to write my board exams in April of 2022.
Life as a Registered Massage Therapist
After graduating, my partner and I left the Okanagan and moved to Victoria in order to be closer to family. We are now feeling very fortunate to be able to live and explore this beautiful region of Canada, and slowly but surely we are embracing the laid-back lifestyle that Vancouver Island has offered us. We now spend our time working during the week and get out on the weekends to explore all of the mysteries and wonders that the island has to offer. We would like to thank the community for welcoming us with such enthusiasm and look forward to making plenty of new friends and memories together for many years to come!
Cheers, Ryan Walsworth RMT
